Recently, publisher Z-Man Games announced the upcoming release of the 20th-anniversary edition of Carcassonne. It’s hard to believe this beloved tile-laying game has been around for 20 years now. Carcassonne, along with Settlers of Catan, was one of my very first introductions into modern tabletop gaming, so it definitely holds a special place in my heart.
From Z-Man Games:
“The base game is upgraded with a high gloss, UV spot print on all the tiles and the box to truly make the details shine and to celebrate this momentous anniversary. The box itself even comes with gold foil lettering and trim to really stand out, as well as two unique designs, giving fans the choice to display their copy on either side.
The tiles themselves, along with the new shine, are upgraded with brand-new illustrations and decorated with characters, though will still be completely compatible with all expansions. Longtime fans of Carcassonne would do well to keep a sharp eye out for any fun easter eggs within these newly decorated pieces.”
For the most part, the game has just been giving a facelift and some higher-end components. It is also said to be compatible with all Carcassonne expansions. There are also a few tweaks to the gameplay noted:
“Along with the new look are 20 brand new tiles. Among these are 5 new river tiles, including the double tile, to create even longer rivers within your landscape. Some of the tiles even come with a couple of new gameplay actions to bring a fresh and exciting, yet faithful Carcassonne experience to both new and old players alike.”
Releasing later this summer, the Carcassonne 20th Anniversary Edition will be available for $49.99. You can preorder it here directly from Z-Man Games.
I’ll most likely purchase this.
