There are about a zillion party games on the market today. From the usual Pictionary and Trivial Pursuit that we all grew up with, to newer titles like Wits and Wagers and Telestrations. However, every now and then a new game comes along that is both creative and entertaining. Enter our newest Kickstarter of the Week: Two Rooms and a Boom! If you haven’t checked it out yet, it’s worth a look if, for nothing else, then to watch the very entertaining intro video on the campaign page. I’ve made no secret of my usual disappointment in kickstarter videos for tabletop games. I feel like 90% of the time they are a waste of 3 minutes of my life. However the minds behind Two Room and A Boom! bring both energy and creativity to their video. It’s funny and it also explains what the game is about. Kudos to them on that.
Anyway, Two Rooms and a Boom! is a hidden role party game that can accommodate 6-30 players and has a play time of about 7-20 mins. The game play is very simple and makes for a lot of player interaction.
From the Kickstarter Page:
Two Rooms and a Boom! is a social deduction, hidden role game. Unlike other hidden role games, there is no need for a moderator. Each game is timed (so you know it won’t last too long) and you can do whatever you want with your character card, including showing it to other players (that’s identity verification).
At the beginning of a game, players are equally distributed between 2separate playing areas (usually 2 separate rooms) and then each player is randomly dealt a facedown character card. There are 2 teams, the Red Team and the Blue Team. The Blue Team has a President. The Red Team has a Bomber.
Each room has a leader selected by the players in that room. The leader chooses hostages (players who will be sent into the other room at the end of the round).
The game consists of 3 timed rounds. Each round is shorter than the previous round. At the end of each round, the hostages selected by the leaders will be traded into opposing rooms. If the Red Team’s Bomber is in the same room as the President at the end of the game, then the Red Team wins. Otherwise the Blue Team wins.
I’ll be honest, I can’t wait to give this game a try. Two Rooms and a Boom! has also added a ton of cards via stretch goals that will add a lot of diversity to the game with different roles for the players to take on. If you want your own copy, a pledge of $20 gets you the game and every stretch goal unlocked (16 at the time of this writing). The game is scheduled to be in backers hands in June of 2014 and you have until Friday, Nov 29th to become a backer, so head over there today.
I played the prototype of the game at ProtoSpiel two years ago. We played at least 10 rounds of the game, and had a great time. It is very suspenseful.
