Unmatched Marvel

As first reported by Slashfilm, Mondo (who co-publishes Unmatched with Restoration Games) revealed today that heroes from the Marvel universe are coming to the Unmatched system in 2021. Four new sets will be joining the ever-growing list of characters for this light skirmish game. Highlights include Daredevil, Ms. Marvel, and Black Panther! So get ready to have Black Widow face off against Bruce Lee, or Luke Cage take on the raptors from Jurassic Park. One of my main criticisms of Unmatched has always been some of the less interesting characters from the public domain. I just had a hard time getting excited about controlling Samson or Beowulf. This definitely goes a long way to addressing that!

Here are the packs of Marvel-themed editions to Unmatched that were revealed. Gamers can expect these to hit store shelves in summer 2021:

  • Redemption Row – featuring Luke Cage, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight
  • Hell’s Kitchen – featuring Daredevil, Elektra, and Bullseye
  • Teen Spirit – featuring Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, and Cloak and Dagger
  • For King and Country – featuring Black Widow, Black Panther, and Winter Soldier

Notably, these are the first Unmatched sets that will feature 3 characters in one box. Up until now, they’ve always been either a pair, 4 heroes, or one for Bruce Lee (although that always felt like more of a promo expansion). Slashfilm speculates that Restoration Games and Mondo have finally created a set of 3 player rules for the game. Time will tell on that one.

No word on what maps will also be included in the box, but I’m hoping that they follow in the style of Restoration’s recent release of Little Red Riding Hood vs. Beowulf and have the alternative art on the backside of the game board without the pie-chart style spaces. In either case, here’s hoping that there will be a Hell’s Kitchen or Jersey City map for our heroes to duke it out in.

Per Slashfilm, Jayme Boucher, Director of Games at Mondo, had this to say about the new releases:

“Unmatched is more than a fighting game. It’s an invitation to cast yourself as the hero in an epic story, something Marvel has absolutely no shortage of. The team’s unfettered love of these characters and stories has resulted in some of the most excitingly thematic character development in the series to date. We can’t wait to share it with fellow fans.”

2021 is shaping up to be a really good year for Unmatched and I can’t wait to get these to the table. For now, you can pick up existing Unmatched sets from Mondo or Restoration Games.
