There is one theme that always seems to immediately suck me in. The age of wooden sailing ships on the high seas. Whether I’m watching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (of varying quality), buying more Sails of Glory ships, or playing AC4: Black Flag, I love me some adventure on the high seas. And feel free to throw in a few pirates while your at it, it only makes it better.
So with that in mind, it clearly didn’t take me long to decide I need to play our newest Kickstarter of the Week, Dead Men Tell No Tales. The premise is simple. You are entrepreneurial pirates who have already done the hard work and disabled your target ship. Now you need to get in there, loot it, and get out. Dead Men Tell No Tales is a cooperative board game for 2-5 players that will have you racing around a burning ship, trying to collect loot and stay alive.
From the Kickstarter Page:
Dead Men Tell No Tales (DMTNT) is a cooperative game where players take on the role of a Pirate crew, boarding the doomed Skelit’s Revenge for one purpose: to take the loot. You need to deal with the spreading fire and explosion potential as well as the enemies left on the ship. But what’s a little risk for the plunder!
Each round you flip over a new tile to add to the ship and you also flip a card to show where the Skeleton Crew advances. You may then take a number of actions and use shared equipment to deal with the fire, your own fatigue, the trapdoors and guards on the ship.
In DMTNT you can even pass some of your action tokens to the person to your left in case they need extra help this round. Simple to resolve combat feels engaging without taking more than a quick die roll. You will be constantly gaining fatigue and you must manage your ability to keep going.
The artwork for Dead Men Tell No Tales is already finished and looks fantastic. If the game plays half as good, I’m sold. If you’d like to become a backer, a $39 pledge will get you a copy of the game and all stretch goals. Dead Men Tell No Tales is scheduled to be in backers hands in April of 2015 and you have until Monday, September 15th to become a backer. So head over today and check it out.
