Two micro games in a row for our Kickstarter of the Week? I know. I didn’t want to, really. I told myself that you, my loyal readers, need variety. Another pay what you want micro game? People will think I’m just mailing it in. But I promise I’m not, I just picked the game I’m most excited about this week and that game is Coin Age. Fair enough?
Ok, silliness out of the way, Coin Age does look pretty awesome. I’ve already talked a bunch about how much I’m enjoying micro games. What got me to back this one was how ultra portable it is. The only thing you need to play is one credit card sized map and 4 coins. That’s it! I said to myself, “Tony, this is a game you can put in your wallet and play anywhere.” I love that about Coin Age. Gaming on the go with no planning required. Sold! And for $3, it appeals to my frugal (my wife calls it cheap) nature. So how about the actual game play.

Coin Age is a quick-playing area control game with lots of player interaction that uses an innovative “coin slap” mechanic to determine available actions. On your turn, you will take one of each of your remaining types of coins into your hand (1 quarter, 1 nickel, 1 penny, and 1 dime), shake them up, then slap them down on the table.
Depending on the number of coins that match your “side”, you are then able to either place coins on the map, move previously placed coins to an adjacent space, or remove them altogether.
When placing coins, you may also place your coins on top of your opponent’s coins if your coin’s size/rank is smaller, so while a quarter will give you the most victory points at the end of the game, it is the easiest for your opponent to cover.
Coin Age has already destroyed its funding goal ($40,000 at the time of this writing) and has already hit a few stretch goals. To get a copy of Coin Age you can pay whatever you want ($3 minimum with a suggested pledge of $5). Coin Age is scheduled to be in backers hands in April of 2014. This quick moving campaign ends on Friday Dec 20th, so head over there today if you want to get in on it.
